How to Register to Vote

Register Online

You’ll need your New Mexico driver’s license or state ID card number, Social Security number, and birthday.

To register online, the address where you’re registering to vote needs to match the address on file with the state Motor Vehicle Division.

1. Get the voter registration form.

2. Fill out the form

Step 1 · Provide your name, gender, birthday, and Social Security number

Step 2 · Provide your address. If you don’t have a street address, draw a map at the bottom of the form to show where you live.

Step 3 · Provide your mailing address, if different from Step 2

Step 4 · If you’re changing your name, provide your previous name

Step 5 · (Optional) Provide your email address

Step 6 · Provide your political party or check the box if you don’t have a political party

Step 7 · (Optional) Provide your phone number, and check the box to indicate if you want the county clerk to make your phone number public. Check the box if you want to volunteer at a voting place on Election Day, Nov 8.

Step 8 · If you’ve registered to vote before, provide the city, county, and state where you were registered

Step 9 · Check the boxes to indicate if you’re a US citizen and will be at least 18 years old on Election Day, Nov 8

Step 10 · Sign and date the form

Step 11 · If you’re registering for the first time in New Mexico, include a copy of your photo ID, or a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address


3. Send the form.

Your completed form must be mailed by Oct 11 to your county clerk’s office

3. Return the form

Your completed form must be filled out, signed, and dated by Oct 11 and returned in person by Oct 14 to your county clerk’s office

2. Fill out the application

Step 1 · Provide your county

Step 2 · To receive an absentee ballot for the general election on Nov 8, check the box for “General”

Step 3 · Provide your name

Step 4 · Provide the address where you’d like the ballot to be mailed

Steps 5-6 · Provide your street address, city, state, and zip code

Step 7 · Provide the year you were born

Step 8 · Sign and date the form


3. Return the application

Mail the signed and completed form to your county clerk’s office so that it’s received by 5 PM on Nov 4


4. Vote
  • Once you receive your ballot, follow the instructions to fill out the ballot and return envelope
  • Attach a copy of an accepted form of ID, if required
  • Mail your ballot so it’s received at the address on the ballot return envelope no later than 7 PM on Election Day, Nov 8
  • Check the status of your ballot through your county on sos.state.nm.us

ID requirements

Most voters aren’t required to show ID. Voters who registered in New Mexico for the first time, submitted their registration by mail, and didn’t include a copy of their ID when they registered need to enclose or bring a copy of one of the following:

  • Photo ID
  • Utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Government check
  • Paycheck
  • Student ID card
  • ID issued by an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo
  • Other government document that shows your name and current address

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Once you receive your absentee ballot, you cannot change your mind and vote in person on election day. However, if you applied but never received your absentee ballot, you can go to your polling place and vote. You will be required to sign a sworn statement, under penalty of perjury, that you did not receive your ballot.
Yes. If you register by mail, you must include a copy of your identification with your voter registration application. If you forget, you’ll need to provide ID the first time you vote in person or by absentee ballot. Acceptable forms of ID include:a current and valid photo identification with or without an address (the address does not need to match the one at which you registered to vote) OR a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student identification card or other government document, including identification issued by an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo, that shows your name and address (the address does not need to match the one at which you’re registering to vote).
You do not need to include ID if you’ve already voted in New Mexico at least once. If you are a first-time voter and you forgot to include copies of your ID with your registration form, include them with your absentee ballot application. First-time voters who are voting absentee: If you don’t meet the voter ID requirements when you register to vote, you’ll be notified by mail and you will need to provide a copy of your identification with your absentee ballot. Acceptable forms of ID include: a current and valid photo identification with or without an address (the address does not need to match the one at which you registered to vote) OR a utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, student identification card or other government document, including identification issued by an Indian nation, tribe or pueblo, that shows your name and address (the address does not need to match the one at which you’re registering to vote).
